Dr. Jing Wang
Founder of School
B.S.: Cornell University
Johns Hopkins Hospital
Dr. Jing Wang is the Founder of Hsinchu County American School. As a child, she moved from Beijing, China to the United States with her family. She attended Cornell University where she received her bachelor's degree and met her husband Peter Huang. She went on to study medicine at Johns Hopkins Hospital.
Today she is a board certified medical physician who practices in the United States part of the year. She has a first hand experience of how Western education develops innovative thinkers because kids are taught how to think not necessarily what to think; they are taught how to figure out the process not the result. This independent thinking is so important in the development of a person's character.
Her vision for the Hsinchu County American School is to bring together dedicated and motivated professionals that have an innate passion to provide great services to students. We strive to provide opportunities, resources, and rigor in all our programs to fulfill our students’ expectations to prepare them to meet the challenges of the 21st century.
Peter Posen Huang is the Chairman of Hsinchu County American School. He has been instrumental in the founding stages of the school, assembling the best people and resources to help students succeed and position the school as a leading American School in Taiwan and Asia.
Born in Taiwan, he grew up in Montreal, Canada where he completed elementary, middle and high school. Subsequently he went to U.S. for college and graduate school, completing his undergraduate studies at Cornell University and graduate studies at Harvard University.
As a result of his upbringing, he has a deep appreciation for the North American education, for the way it empowers individuals in independent thinking, creativity and having the courage to pursue their passion and succeed at their respective fields. Ultimately, he wishes to bring elements of the North American education to Taiwan so students can go on to top colleges of their choice internationally and have a world of opportunities open to them.
In addition to actively building up the school, he continues to take interests in architecture and cuisine, as a licensed chef and restaurant owner. He is married to Jing Wang and is father of two boys, Oscar and Lucas.

I have done adjunct lecturing at the University of Maryland at Baltimore and Frederick Community College, and I have coached World Scholar's Cup and the Fed Challenge very successfully. World Scholar's Cup named me Coach of the Year for 2017. I have served as an evaluator for Middle States accreditation visits in the past.

Greetings HCAS community and please accept my sincere thanks for your kind welcome and strong support. I am originally from Denver Colorado, but I have been traveling and working in education in various places around the world since 2007. I hold a Bachelor's Degree in Political Science and Philosophy, a Master's Degree in Diplomacy and will be completing another Master's Degree in International School Leadership during the 2021-2022 school year. I have come to Taiwan because I not only see Taiwan serving as an important role as a bridge between the Eastern and Western worlds, but also because I find this country to be my true second home.
My educational leadership belief is that a leader's main role is to serve others. This includes serving students to ensure they have a challenging yet enjoyable learning environment, serving parents with ensuring their voices are heard and responded to as well as serving teachers with providing the goals and support needed for professional growth. To lead others truly means to serve others.

Prior to his career in education, he worked as an emergency medical technician for the Denver Paramedic Division. As a U.S. Air Force brat, he had a nomadic upbringing; growing up in several different countries throughout Europe, the Middle East, and North America. Outside of school, he enjoys running, swimming, and spending quality time with his wife, their son, and their two dogs.
My name is Brandy Sheahan, and I am so happy to be joining the HCAS team as the K2 teacher. I completed my diplomas in Early Childhood Education and Developmental Services Worker before beginning my undergraduate studies. I obtained a B.A. in Psychology and then went on to complete a B.A. in Education at Queen’s University. I am in my tenth year of teaching in Taiwan. While I have taught different age levels, my passion is in Early Education. I love creating a positive, happy, and fun environment for children to learn and grow. My goal is to establish a love for learning and encourage curiosity from the first days of school life. My philosophy is that when children are engaged and having fun, they are learning without realizing it.

Hello everyone! I am very excited to be joining the kindergarten team at HCAS this year. I graduated from the University of Toronto with an honors degree in Political Science and went on to earn a Master of Education from Queens University. I am certified to teach K-3, ESOL K-6 and IB (PYP).
I began my teaching career in Taiwan in 2004. Having taught young learners all over Asia in the years since, my heart has always belonged to this beautiful island and I am excited to be returning this fall. I believe that young children develop their understanding of the world around them when learning is rooted in their own interests, questions and experiences. A kindergarten environment is fun, engaging and encouraging and reflects the joyful nature of the students and teachers who make it their own.

My name is Louise Harvey. I am excited to be the 2nd grade teacher at HCAS this year. It will be my first year at the school but I have 12 years of varied instructional experience in Taiwan. I am a creative, resourceful teacher that is invested in educating with a holistic approach to encourage students to reach their full potential. My goal is to create and maintain a communicative and supportive classroom, in which each student feels safe, secure, and appropriately challenged.

Middle & Upper School English
M.A: Ateneo de Manila University
TESOL Certified, Trinity College UK
I am a product of an East-meets-West education. I grew up in both Canada and the Philippines and spent different stages of my formative years in both countries. I studied English Literature at the University of Toronto and finished my Masters in English Language and Literature Teaching at the Ateneo de Manila University.
My professional experience started in the world of business, but I kept hearing the call of teaching. I answered the call in 2004 and never looked back. In the 13 years that I’ve been teaching, I’ve taught English and Literature at middle school, high school, and university levels; EFL to students ranging from young learners all the way to adults; and Professional or Business English courses. For the majority of my classes and courses, I have had the opportunity to design the curriculums and materials—a task that I actually enjoy. I find it both challenging and exciting to research and come up with different and innovative ways to help learners learn. This school year, I’ll be working with the middle and upper school classes.
Teaching is a passion of mine, and the joy of seeing my students question, discover, and learn is like cheering on a favorite athlete. Like a fan or a coach, I share in their triumphs and encourage them on when they encounter obstacles. As a teacher, my personal goal is to create an environment where students are challenged to be independent, critical thinkers who recognize their individual strengths in order to achieve success in the classroom and beyond.
When I’m not in the classroom (or thinking about my classes), I enjoy reading, painting, dancing, watching musicals and plays, visiting galleries and museums, learning about different cultures through travel, connecting with family and friends (who are all over the world), and spending quality time with my husband.
B.A. University of Massachusetts at Dartmouth
M.A. Teachers College at Columbia University
I’m Peter Sawyer, and I teach Upper- Level English classes as well as serving as Director of the English Program. I’ve been teaching university and high-school English for 22 years, and I’m always ready for a great classroom discussion on Literature, the Writing Process, and, perhaps most interestingly for my students, how popular culture and current events tie into our discussion of texts and connect to teens’ lives.
My background is unusual because I am curious about all the disciplines and how they interconnect. I log Theatre Arts, Cartooning, Animation, and Astronomy among my passions, and my decade-long professional broadcasting career on Martha’s Vineyard in my native Massachusetts whet my appetite for good writing, ultimately leading to my returning to school to become a teacher.
I graduated from the University of Massachusetts at Dartmouth with a B.A. in English, with a focus on Writing and Communications. I went from there right to Columbia University’s Teachers College in New York City to procure my M.A. in the Teaching of English; I’ve been teaching English ever since.
I enjoy reading, writing my own fiction and poetry, stargazing, watching movies, going to the theatre, sketching, music, and biking and hiking the ever-wonderous trails of Taiwan.
B.A. Western Washington University

Monty holds a Master’s in Education, USA teaching certificate, undergraduate degree in language arts, and almost a decade of teaching experience. He enjoys bicycles, board games, roller skating, and the Oxford comma.
My experience has taught me that, “No matter where you go, there you are.” As technology develops and the world changes, the most stable resource students can invest in is their own thinking. We won’t solve problems we encounter by quoting Shakespearean soliloquies - we’ll do it through the application of studied techniques and through our developed critical analysis and collaboration skills.

Dave Vaughan is a Canadian with experience teaching in Beijing, Taichung and Sulaymaniyah, Iraq. He discovered the joy and value of teaching growing up in a largely connected extended family in small-town Ontario. Dave has shown great interest in developing his institution’s approach to international education, both through the organization of extracurricular activities (MUN conferences and Young Diplomats training) and curriculum flexibility (project-based learning courses and international learning projects). He enjoys hiking for the sake of feeding his need for adventure and exploration, while also contributing to a coalition of writers and activists online.

We completed our masters of teaching and teaching licensure last year, when we were student teaching at Kaohsiung American School in the south of Taiwan.
Right now, our species is facing more problems than ever. I believe that with a firm grasp on math and science, our students will be able to confront these problems and save the world! Learning is a continual process, and I always encourage my students to try different things. Some of the things I do when I’m not teaching include hiking, biking, snorkeling, scuba diving, traveling, graphic design, music recording, video editing, and learning languages

Hello everyone! I'm Connie Fan. I graduated from Shanghai Jiao Tong University. I stayed in Shanghai about three years and taught the CAL (Teaching Chinese as Second Language) classes in the language center of SJTU. In recent years, Chinese has become more popular, making more and more people learn Chinese. As Taiwan is a rare place that still uses traditional Chinese characters, we should let students know the importance and how lucky they are. In my Chinese class, I like to make students reading and thinking instead of giving them a test in each class. Learning a language is not about the number of words they know, or how much grammar they can recognize. we have to let the students know the culture behind this sentence and the thought the author wants to tell us. I hope every student can enjoy themselves in my Chinese class, and from the bottom of their heart to love Chinese.

Here is a quote from one of my favorite writers:
“Oh music! A melody occurs to you; you sing it silently, inwardly only; you steep your being in it; it takes possession of all your strength and emotions, and during the time it lives in you, it effaces all that is fortuitous, evil, coarse, and sad in you; it brings the world into harmony with you, it makes burdens light and gives wings to depressed spirits. “ – Hermann Hesse

My art class in HCAS will contain a lot of magic. Outside of class, I enjoy travel, swimming, reading… and of course making my own artworks.

G’day everyone! My name is David Toyne and I am joining the team here at HCAS to teach Computer Science. I have a Bachelor degree in Science from the University of Melbourne where I majored in Computer Science, with a strong emphasis on programming. I have worked as an Analyst/Programmer for a pharmaceutical retailer in Australia as well as on software and hardware projects as an independent consultant. Of course, I am often recruited by friends and family members to fix their computers – the joys of being a computer geek in an IT world!
In addition to my experience in IT, I have also been an ESL teacher in Korea and China after finishing university. During my years abroad, I have traveled to many different countries throughout Asia, from the temples of Angkor Wat to the jungles of Sumatra, from the heights of Mount Fuji to the beaches of the Gili Islands, where I swam with turtles. I consider travel to be such a great way to broaden the mind and to open our eyes to a range of cultures, interesting people and how the simple problems of humanity can be solved in so many fascinating ways.
In 2011, while working as a programmer, I became very interested in online trading, which led me to eventually quit my job and make a living from trading forex. The market is a puzzle that is endlessly interesting and I will be bringing that enthusiasm to the very first HCAS Hedge Fund Lab! I hope that I can provide some insight into the world of finance, an area that is not well understood but lies at the heart of our global economy.
In my free time, I like hiking, riding and working out at the gym. I love to play sports; golf and tennis being my two favorites. Being from Australia, I’m always happy to visit a beach or even a river which I can jump into and have a swim, so if you know any great hiking trails with a waterfall or river nearby, send me the location and I’ll be your best friend!
I’m very glad to be here with you in the beautiful county of Hsinchu as we all learn and grow together.
Greetings to all! I’m very excited to be joining the HCAS community and am looking forward to a full experience of learning and growth. I am originally from the United States but have been teaching internationally for nearly 15 years. I’m certified to teach by the State of Virginia where I graduated with a Master of Arts in Teaching. Throughout the years I’ve taught students from the youngest of preschool ages all the way to adults in universities. I’ve also found fulfilling work coaching fellow teachers in using effective education technology resources and tools to assist students in becoming true 21st century learners.
The majority of my professional career has been spent in Taiwan where my family has been blessed with three wonderful children. I enjoy a multitude of activities ranging from spending time in the great outdoors, competitive sports, multimedia production and computer hobbies. It will be my pleasure to work in the lower and middle school computer science divisions and I look forward to seeing what adventures the future brings for both myself and the students at HCAS.
